Calea
Calea Zacatechichi is one of the most potent herbs a person can use to explore lucid dreaming and oneiromancy, or dream interpretation, particularly for prophetic purposes. It comes primarily from Mexico, where it has been used by the Chontal people for centuries for divination rituals.
Through its dream mechanisms, it is said to bring greater clarity and precision to one’s perception of the waking world; it teaches one to see more clearly that to dream is also to create one’s reality. It can bring visionary dreams to a person, and allow them to gain new insights from the spirit world.
Calea is said to induce more dreams, improve sleep, help with dream recall, and some research suggests it improves REM sleep. While Calea is primarily known for its powerful ability to enhance dreams, it also has other medicinal uses and it has been used to treat everything from dysentery, fevers, gastrointestinal complaints, and respiratory issues to menstrual pains and headaches. It is anti-inflammatory, can help with anxiety, and is said to “clean the senses.”
If you’re interested in dreamwork, but do not use a dream diary, we would highly recommend beginning a practice of dream writing.
Note: Calea is also a very potent herb. Side-effects are rare, but can include nausea in some people, and occasionally an allergic rash. It can cause a decreased heart rate and blood pressure — anyone with diabetes, cardiovascular problems, psychiatric conditions, or respiratory issues should not take Calea without proper medical supervision. It should not be combined with any drugs for diabetes or blood pressure, or CNS depressants. It belongs to the Asteraceac family, such as sunflower, so people with allergic reactions to any herbs in that family should abstain from using Calea.
