Chamomile

Chamomile is one of the most well-known herbs for mild relaxation and digestive health. It is a gentle herb, considered mild enough to be administered to babies. In ancient Egypt it was offered to the Gods; in Europe, it has been used extensively to treat digestive complaints, in everything from teas to inhalations and compresses: Germans refer to chamomile as “alles zutraut,” which means ‘capable of anything.’

Chamomile also carries magical implications, used in spells to attract money, or to rinse the hands of a gambler needing good luck. It can help assuage stress and tension, and makes wonderful baths. It helps relax the peripheral nerves and muscles, and has been used throughout cultures for treating anxious or upset babies, their teething pain and even colic. Using a steam of the plant is also helpful for treating seasonal allergies.

Note: If you have any allergies to the asteraceae or compositae plants (chrysanthemums, daisies, marigolds, ragweed), use chamomile with caution. Infusions should not be used near the eyes.
