Cistanche
Cistanche, known as Rou Cong Rong in Chinese medicine, is considered ginseng of the desert for its multiform benefits. It supports kidney energy, assists yang, moistens the intestines, frees the stool, and supports a mutual relationship between yin and yang. Some of its common uses include boosting the immune system, improving sexual health, and as an overall health tonic. It is considered a warming herb without being too hot are drying.
Cistanche primarily comes from the arid deserts of Mongolia and northwestern China, so most of its uses are known from the TCM canon, which uses distance as a treatment for renal disease, impotence, female infertility, as well as other ailments relating to the reproductive organs. It also improves brain function and has immune-boosting properties. It is considered a superior remedy in TCM. It is commonly used to treat impotence and premature ejaculation, lower back pain, and constipation; It also has aphrodisiac effects. Some studies have shown it has ability to treat some cases of infertility and to lower blood pressure. Its antioxidant properties are 15 times greater than that of the polyphenols found in grapes and more than five times higher than that of vitamin C found in oranges and pepper. It can also help reverse the effects of arthritis and premature aging, and has shown to have some promise in promoting scalp health and combating hair loss.
Note: cistanche increases the activity of neurotransmitters such as norepinephrine, dopamine, and serotonin; it may therefore interact with SSRIs, tricyclic antidepressants, sympathomimetics, and MAOIs.
