Ashwagandha
Ashwagandha holds a position of importance in Ayurvedic medicine equivalent to that of ginseng in China; it’s been used for thousands of years to strengthen the immune system after an illness and acts mainly on the reproductive and nervous systems, and it is also effectively used to treat nervous exhaustion, debility, insomnia, impotence, infertility, and multiple sclerosis. It is a general stress reliever, having anti-anxiety, anti-depressant, and anti-inflammatory compounds. There is a reason it has become one of the most popular adaptogens available today; with Ashwagandha, the list goes on, it being one of the most provenly effective adaptogenic herbs.
It’s a very versatile supplement — by the nature of it being an “adaptogen,” it has the ability to meet you wherever you’re at, helping the body adapt to everyday stress. Ashwagandha supports a calm mood and balanced energy throughout the whole day, but like many herbs, is not so much an immediate effect as one that builds over time, with consistent use. It’s not that a lot is needed, so much as repeated daily use improves the herbs ability to support the body as the body adjusts to having the support it needs. It can help with getting through hard work days without feeling frazzled, and can even contribute to muscle strength, endurance, and a faster recovery.
Ashwagandha also seems to help balance cortisol levels, as well as interact with neutransmitteres involved in mood and cognition such as GABA and serotonin, which is likely what accounts for its calming and focus-enhancing effects. But unlike some herbs, such as ginseng, which are adaptogens but too stimulating to take at night, Ashwagandha can be taken at any time and can help people fall and stay asleep.
Ashwagandha is one of our favorite herbs for its varied uses and ability to assist the body with what it needs most at any given time. The results of noticeable and effective.
Note: ashwagandha is quite safe in most situations but should be avoided by anyone pregnant or breastfeeding, who has autoimmune diseases or hyperthyroidism, are scheduled for surgery, or are taking sedatives or immunosuppressants.
