Fo-Ti

Fo-Ti, which is also knowns as he shou wu, is a traditional Chinese herb best known as a kidney tonic and for its purported ability to bring color back to graying hair. He shou wu literally means “Mr. He’s Black Hair,” being a man of legend who is said to have resorted his youth and vitality by drinking fo-ti tea. It is thought to help prevent and even reverse premature balding.

Fo-ti supports the adrenal glands and has a long history of use for longevity, blood building, beauty, and general rejuvenation. It is a powerful antioxidant and supports blood flow and energy levels, as well as the aforementioned healthy hair (and skin as well). In TCM it is said to nourish the heart and calm the spirit by unblocking the energy channels through the body, allowing pathogenic influences, often the causes of pain and weakness, to leave the body. Fo-ti is a deeply restorative herb and replenishes Yin Jing, assisting with deep rejuvenation resulting from exhaustion and fatigue. It is said to improve sexual function, increase sperm production in men and fertility in women, strengthen the body’s bone and skeletal systems, rebuild the glandular system, and much more.

Tradition also encourages curing fo-ti root to increase the phosphate content, often by curing raw fo-ti roots in a soup of black bean sauce, but many traditional Chinese recipes are kept close secrets. It can also be combined with jujubes or biota to treat insomnia.

Note: excessive use may cause gastrointestinal upset or diarrhea.
