Mullein

Mullein is a potent anti-inflammatory herb that has been used in herbalism for millennia to treat upper respiratory infections; it’s also great for treating summer colds and seasonal allergies. It works by reducing the formation of mucus and stimulating the coughing-up of phlegm, making it particularly helpful for tracheitis and bronchitis. It grows easily, and can be found growing on roadsides around the world, but don’t let that take away from its potency: a Mullein tincture can treat everything from chest complaints to diarrhea.

Mullein also has a long history of use in folk magic—as an apotropaic (i.e. wards off evil spirits), to instill courage, to promote well-being, to provide protection, and to attract love. In some cultures, Mullein was worn to ensure fertility, whereas in the Ozark mountains, men would point a Mullein stalk towards their love’s house to see if the stalk when upright, indicating whether or not their love was reciprocated.

Originally from Europe, Mullein was introduced to North America by the colonists and then incorporated into Native American healing traditions, where it was commonly used to treat upper respiratory infections. It was smoked to treat sore throats and lung congestion, and has even been shown to be beneficial for smokers’ lungs; it can also help wean a person off of tobacco addiction. Due to its calming effects on all inflammed or irritated nerves, it helps relieve coughs, cramps, and spasms.

Note: the small hairs on Mullein may cause mild irritation. We have filtered ours out, but it’s also possible you get a Mullein that has been less properly filtered.
