Red Root benefits: anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antispasmodic, astringent, expectorant, and a lymphatic and nervine tonic

(If you’re wondering what a spagyric is, click here).

Red Root is one of the most underutilized herbs in the western herbal pharmacopeia. Its uses are myriad, as it has positive effects on the lymphatic, respiratory, and circulatory systems. Red Root is a blood tonic that supports normal circulation, known to help in all cases of stagnancy and heavy feelings in the body. It also helps the body rid toxins through stimulating the lymphatic system, and can help relieve chronically-swollen lymph nodes and chronic congestion. It is especially useful in remedying the lingering effects of a prolonged illness, or getting rid of that sense we sometimes have of always being on the verge of being sick.

Red Root grows widely across the United States, where it can grow in inhospitable conditions and is also one of the first plants to recover after a fire. It was used as tea during the Revolutionary War and for many centuries before that by Native Americans, who boiled the root to treat everything from colds and fevers to pneumonia, digestive problems, toothaches and UTIs. The tannins in Red Root protect cells and DNA from oxidative damage and also protect the heart and blood vessels, and is even thought to be effective in shrinking breast and ovarian cysts.

It is contraindicated for those with blood clotting disorders or who take anticoagulant medication. As it’s slightly drying, make sure to drink lots of fluids during any course of Red Root.
