Rou Cong Wong
Cistanche, also known as Rou Cong Rong, or colloquially as desert ginseng, has been used for centuries in Chinese medicine to support kidney health, general vitality, and reproductive health. It grows primarily in the harsh deserts of northwest China and Mongolia, a parasitic plant—it gets all of its nutrients from a ‘host’ plant—that looks like a cross between a pinecone and a pineapple, and like many plants from such harsh environments, exhibits myriad benefits when taken internally.
Rou Cong Rong is one of our personal favorite herbs for energy and vitality. It’s great for fighting fatigue as well as hormonal balancing. For men it enhances erectile function, sperm health, and testosterone levels, while supporting fertility for women and libido for both men and women. Modern research is also showing that it has significant immune-stimulating activity and neuro-protective activity. It increases the activity of neurotransmitters including norepinephrine, dopamine, and serotonin in the hypothalamus; it is also slow acting and gentle, and does not have the stagnating properties of other tonic herbs. It is a general adaptogenic, able to support the body with whatever its needs may be.
