Note: as some of the herbs may be stimulating, it’s best taken in morning to avoid complications with insomnia. Be mindful if taking prescription medication for anxiety, depression, or other psychiatric conditions.
Lemon Balm
A calming, uplifting herb with a long history in western herbalism, Lemon Balm comes from the Mediterranean, where it has been cultivated for over 2,000 years. Ibn Sina recommended it “to make the heart merry” and Paracelsus claimed it could completely revitalize the body. Lemon Balm is helpful for anxiety, depression, mood enhancement, infections, and relieving a stressed nervous system. It has been used since ancient times to calm the heart and the body, and has always been considered to have properties of a spiritual nature — used in spells to heal broken hearts and, alternatively, to attract romantic love. It expels melancholy and helps remove obstructions to the brain.
Saffron
Highly prized as a culinary spice — the most expensive spice in the world — Saffron was both mentioned in the Bible and used by Ancient Greeks and Egyptians to boost mood, enhance libido, and improve memory. Studies have found saffron to be just as effective as various pharmaceutals at treating depression, including Prozac and Celexa, without harmful side effects. Saffron is high in antioxidants, which help neutralize free-radicals, and is considered to invigorate and strengthen the entire body, support healthy brain aging, and promote a balanced mood.
Damiana
Damiana is an herb prized by the Mayans and Aztecs for producing a gentle emotional uplift and having a calming effect on the psyche. It is also a kidney tonic, stress reducer, and aphrodisiac for both men and women. It supports digestion and general health.
Eleuthero
An adaptogen used traditionally in Chinese, Korean, and Russian herbalism, Eleuthero is known for promoting overall health. It is the first “adaptogen,” in that the term itself was coined by Soviet scientists in the 1960s describing Eleuthero’s functions as an herb able to serve many different purposes depending on the body’s needs. It is a member of the ginseng family and sometimes considered “Siberian ginseng.” Eleuthero is used to invigorate qi, strengthen and nourish the spleen and kidney, and to balance vital energy.
Muira Puama
Known as potency wood, Muira Puama is a small tree that grows across the Amazonian river basin and has a long history of use as an energy tonic and general health improver. Muira Puama also fortifies and stimulates the nervous system, which makes it helpful for nervous disorders like depression, stress, exhaustion, neuralgia, and trauma, and acts as a central nervous system tonic. In high doses it can cause insomnia.
Kanna
Indigenous to South Africa, Kanna was used by warriors returning from battle to dispel the fear and depression common after violent conflict. Kanna elevates the mood and decreases anxiety and stress. It has also been used as an appetite suppressant by shepherds covering long distances. The mood-elevating action is caused by alkaloids which interact with the brain’s dopamine and serotonin receptors, increasing extracellular concentrations of serotonin. A very potent herb that is present, in our tincture, in a small amount.
