Suma

Suma is indigenous to South America, where it grows throughout many countries including Brazil, Ecuador, Peru, and Venezuela. Its nickname is “para todo,” or “for all,” because its adaptogenic qualities have led to its use for everything from an aphrodisiac to a calming agent. But that’s what adaptogens are: herbs that help the body adapt to a wide range of internal and external stressors, whether sickness, lack of sleep, physical or mental exhaustion, while also supporting endurance and overall vitality; by definition, they adapt to what the body most needs. Which is perhaps why Suma’s other nickname is “Brazilian ginseng”; while not related to ginseng, its mechanisms and wide variety of uses are similar.

Suma stimulates the body’s immune response to help assist with healing and recovery from chronic illness, including cancer and diabetes. However Suma, unlike some stimulating herbs, provides energy without taxing the adrenal glands. Suma has antispasmodic mechanisms and can also help overcome hangovers. It has been used to treat ulcers, and as an overall rejuvenating tonic for the body.

Note: Suma may have oestrogen effects. Do not use with oestrogen-positive cancers.
