Passionflower
Passionflower promotes natural relaxation and stress reduction. It works both gently and profoundly on the mind, body, and spirit. Its use goes back thousands of years in Native Americans medicine, though the “passion” in the name refers not to bodily passion but to passion in the Biblical sense — the plant is said to resemble, symbolically, the last days of Jesus and, particularly, his crucifixion. For magical purposes, Passionflower has been used to attract friendship and bring peace. It is a nerve tonic that soothes the adrenals and also interacts with nicotine receptors, making it a great herb for combating nicotine cravings or withdrawal.
California Poppy
Our state flower, the California Poppy, is a mild, non-addictive plant used historically for pain relief, anxiety, and hysteria. The native Americans used it for colic, as well as sleeplessness and stomach pains; it counters excitability and nervousness in children and promotes long, restful sleep. Also great for any type of cravings or withdrawals.
Catnip
Catnip has a long history across cultures — early Europeans used it for cramps, aches, fevers, and fits; the Chinese used it for chest complaints and believed it attracted good spirits and happiness. It supports against colds and flus and helps flush out fevers, and, in our case, is used for its nervine support: catnip calms the nervous system and aids in a good night’s rest. It reduces anxiety, tension, and hyperactivity, and supports normalizing digestive disturbances. Catnip is uplifting without being stimulating, used by the indigenous of both the old world and the new world. And a fun fact — catnip affects not only house cats but large cats too. Perhaps it would be wise to keep some on you if you find yourself in the jungle; it is even used in some zoos to calm down lions and tigers.
