Ginkgo
Ginkgo is considered one of the oldest living plant species on earth — more than 225 million years old — and, while it is native to China, where it has a long history of traditional use, it has recently also become one of the top-selling herbs in both the US and Europe. Ginkgo trees can live to be over 1,000 years old, and their hardiness is exemplified by the six ginkgo trees that survived the bombing in Hiroshima, the closest of which was only 1200 meters from the epicenter and still lives today.
It has a wide range of active compounds and over 400 scientific publications, making it one of the most well-researched herbal products. It has been shown to affect recall, recognition memory, reaction time, attention, concentration, mood, and energy levels; many of its effects are due either directly or indirectly to Ginkgo’s antioxidant activity, optimal blood flow, and neuroprotective actions. The combined effects are probably greater than that of an individual mechanism
Its primary action is to increase blood circulation, as well as having a tonic effect on the brain, reducing lethargy, improving memory, and increasing overall well-being — there have even been reports of ginkgo greatly improving memory recall when taken before exams, due to the increased blood flow in the brain.
Ginkgo has a powerful effect on the circulatory system and can help if you have cold extremities; it also assists the heart and can help prevent and treat strokes by preventing the formation of blood clots; it can also help restore short-term memory, especially when that’s been harmed by drug use, even cannabis.
Due to its ability to dilate blood vessels and improve blood flow to tissue, it is recommended throughout the world to people as they age in order to combat heart disease.
It is a unique species of tree with no close living relatives, and one of the best-known examples of a living fossil.
Note: Ginkgo should not be taken if on heart medications, anticoagulants, or anti platelet (i.e. warfarin, aspirin).
